Expense Tracker for 1099 Contractors

Track every deduction. Auto-map to Schedule C. Export and file.

If you receive a 1099-NEC, you're self-employed — and Schedule C is your tax form. Every legitimate business expense reduces your taxable income and your self-employment tax bill. CentSense makes sure you capture all of them.

Who Is a 1099 Contractor?

You're a 1099 independent contractor if a client pays you for services and issues a 1099-NEC (if $600 or more in a year). Common situations:

  • Freelancers and consultants (any industry)
  • Gig workers (Uber, DoorDash, Instacart, TaskRabbit)
  • Etsy sellers and online shop owners
  • Real estate agents
  • Contract software developers, designers, writers
  • Healthcare locums and staffing agency workers

All of these file Schedule C to report income and deduct expenses.

Self-Employment Tax: The Cost You Can Partially Deduct

As a 1099 contractor, you pay 15.3% SE tax on net profit. Unlike employees, no employer pays half for you.

The good news: You deduct half of SE tax on Schedule 1, Line 15. This reduces your adjusted gross income before calculating income tax.

Budgeting rule of thumb: Set aside 25–30% of every payment for federal taxes (SE tax + income tax bracket).

Quarterly Estimated Taxes

If you expect to owe $1,000+ for the year, pay quarterly:

QuarterCoversDue Date (2026)
Q1Jan–MarApril 15, 2026
Q2Apr–MayJune 16, 2026
Q3Jun–AugSeptember 15, 2026
Q4Sep–DecJanuary 15, 2027

Missing a payment triggers an underpayment penalty, even if you pay in full at filing.
